Southern Delta University asks applicants to send their applications in writing to the Registrar with five copies of their curriculum vitae, and at least one of its recruitment rounds closed two weeks from the date the advert appeared. That’s a physical application, in an envelope, inside a fortnight. Anyone waiting to hear about a vacancy secondhand has already lost.
The university is the largest employer in Isoko and it’s still growing, so it’s worth understanding how its recruitment works before an advert appears rather than after. Here’s what it hires for, where it publishes, and what to have ready.
Search all three names or you’ll miss the adverts
The institution began as Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, established in November 2002. On 23 February 2021 an Act of the Delta State House of Assembly converted it into a university, and it operated as Delta State University of Science and Technology, commonly shortened to DSUST. It has since been upgraded again to Southern Delta University.
All three names are still in circulation on Nigerian job sites, and a recruitment advert published under one won’t show up if you’re searching another. Set your searches for Southern Delta University, Delta State University of Science and Technology and Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro, and check all three when a round is rumoured.
The official website is sdu.edu.ng, and that’s the domain to trust. The Registry can be reached at registrar@sdu.edu.ng, registraroffice@sdu.edu.ng and registry@sdu.edu.ng. Anything claiming to be university recruitment from a Gmail address or a different domain is not from them.
Two campuses, and the engineering base is unusually wide
The main campus sits on Ozoro-Kwale Road in Ozoro, and there’s a second campus at Orerokpe in Okpe Local Government Area which extends the university’s reach toward Warri. A Faculty of Medical Sciences building is under construction at Ozoro, and the Orerokpe campus is still being developed.
The academic spread is broad and heavily technical, which matters because it determines who they hire. Engineering covers mechanical, civil, water resources, agricultural, electrical, aerospace, material and metallurgical, marine, petroleum and gas and oil engineering. Computing covers computer science, cyber security, software engineering and information systems. There’s a built environment cluster with architecture, estate management, quantity surveying, surveying and geoinformatics, building technology and urban and regional planning.
Alongside those sit agriculture and fisheries, geology, marine science, environmental management and toxicology, petroleum chemistry, food science and technology, fine and applied arts and industrial design, and a management sciences faculty running accounting and finance, marketing, business administration, entrepreneurship, transport management, procurement management, securities and investment management, actuarial science and insurance. A 2025 round advertised Lecturer I posts across several of those management disciplines plus history and international studies.
What the academic grades actually require
Academic recruitment is graded, and each grade has a hard entry requirement rather than a preference. For Lecturer I, candidates need a PhD from a recognised university plus at least two years as Lecturer II in a recognised university. Moving higher requires a PhD plus at least three years at the grade below. Professors from any university recognised by the Senate of Southern Delta University are also eligible to apply directly.
At senior levels the university looks for clear evidence of participation in academic activities and administration, not just teaching. Publications, supervision, committee work and administrative experience all count, so the CV needs to document them properly rather than list a job history.
If you don’t hold a PhD, don’t write off the institution. Universities employ far more non-academic than academic staff, and those roles are where most local people actually get in.
The non-academic roles are the realistic route for most people
The Registrar is the chief administrative officer, responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the day-to-day running of the university, and beneath that sits an entire administrative structure. Registry, bursary, admissions, examinations and records, the library, ICT support, laboratory and workshop technologists, health services, works and maintenance, transport, security, catering and grounds all need staffing.
With a Faculty of Medical Sciences under construction and a second campus developing at Orerokpe, the technologist and support side is likely to keep expanding. If you hold an OND, HND or a degree in a laboratory discipline, accounting, library science, computing or a trade, these are the openings to watch for. They’re also the ones least likely to be reported by national job sites, which is exactly why watching locally pays.
How to actually apply when a round opens
Applications go directly in writing to: The Registrar, Southern Delta University, P.M.B. 5, Ozoro, Delta State, Nigeria. You supply evidence of your qualifications and supporting documents, along with five copies of your CV.
That five copies detail catches people out every time. Printing and binding five sets of a CV with attached credentials takes time and money, and doing it in the last two days of a window while also chasing a certificate is how good candidates end up submitting sloppy applications. Prepare a master set now, keep it in a folder, and you only need to reprint when something changes.
Your CV should cover the standard ground properly. Full name and contact details, date and place of birth, state of origin and local government area, marital status, full educational history with dates and institutions, qualifications with dates obtained, work experience, publications where relevant, professional memberships, and referees. Because state institutions weigh indigene status, having your Certificate of State of Origin in the pack rather than promised later is worth doing.
Where the adverts appear, and how to avoid the fake ones
Genuine rounds are published on sdu.edu.ng, advertised in national newspapers, and picked up afterwards by Nigerian job portals. Because the university recruits in waves rather than continuously, months can pass with nothing, and then a large batch opens with a short deadline.
Treat any claim of an open recruitment with the same care you’d apply to a government exercise. Check the university’s own website before believing a blog, and remember that no legitimate university recruitment asks applicants for money at any stage.
